How We Assess Risk
All PC viruses pose some risk to computer users. Whenever AVERT discovers a new virus, it assigns it a risk assessment of either Low, Medium, or High.
Low Medium High
Three factors go into AVERT's assessment of the risk represented by a given virus: prevalence, danger of payload, and commonality of infection vehicle (the environment).
As a rule, whenever a virus is assigned a High risk assessment, it is very important to protect your system immediately. With a Medium or Low risk virus, there is considerably less danger of catastrophic damage to your system. Nonetheless, it is still very important to take steps to protect yourself and your data from these viruses.
