McAfee.com Launches Internet Privacy Service; Safeguards Users' Privacy while Blocking Inappropriate Content

Content filter and Ad/Cookie blocker are the latest components to join McAfee.com's top-of-the-line Web-based security services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 2, 2000 - McAfee.com (Nasdaq:MCAF), a leading security Application Service Provider (ASP) announced today the launch of McAfee.com Internet Privacy Service, a content filter and ad/cookie blocker designed to protect users and their digital assets from the negative aspects of the Internet. This new service further bolsters McAfee.com's offering of premier Web-based anti-virus, security and maintenance services, which include McAfee.com Clinic, Personal Firewall and the Wireless Security Center. Now users have access to the most comprehensive security services to protect and maintain digital assets, secure privacy and shield from inappropriate Internet content.

Internet Privacy Service grants users the power to easily and selectively filter Internet content they want to view. This technology is especially useful for parents who want a powerful tool to protect their children from objectionable or offensive content as they explore and interact on the Internet. For example, by using this service a parent can "flag" certain Web sites they deem inappropriate, thus blocking the download of the site by their children. Another key security feature of this service is the ability to qualify sensitive information before it is transmitted online. Internet Privacy Service monitors and encrypts all personal information like credit card, Social Security and bank account numbers, and helps to prevent any unauthorized transmissions of this data and giving users complete control over their confidential information.

Key features of McAfee.com Internet Privacy Service include:

  • Content Filtering: Allows parents to restrict the content their children are able to view on the web. Parents are able to create different accounts for each child and vary the filtering level based on the child's age and maturity level.
  • Cookie Blocker: Enables users to manage a website's ability to place cookies on their PC. Users are given the option of blocking all cookies or individually selecting the websites from which they would like to allow cookies.
  • Ad Blocker: Effectively blocks cumbersome banner ads, pop-up ads and other unwanted web clutter from the user's sight. This frees up valuable memory and expedites the download process.
  • Automatic Chat Filtering: Unlike other content filtering products, McAfee.com Privacy Service automatically blocks offensive content from most chat software and prevents children from entering chat rooms with offensive titles.
  • Internet Time Limits: Parents can restrict the time that their children are allowed to go online. Parents simply enter the days and times that children are allowed to access the Internet and the child is blocked from using the Internet at all other times.
  • Website Blocker: Gives parents the ability to enter URLs of specific sites that they would like to block their children from accessing.
"McAfee.com Internet Privacy Service is the perfect complement to our existing services, furthering our commitment to provide subscribers with a top-quality Internet security solution," said Patti Dock, vice president of marketing, McAfee.com. "We acknowledge that privacy and parental control of Internet content are important concerns of our subscribers. As the Internet continues to expand, services like Internet Privacy Service will prove invaluable to users."

Pricing: An annual subscription to Internet Privacy Service, available immediately, may be purchased for$29.95 (USD).
