Upgrading your operating system can be frightening, especially when you don't know if your old software is compatible. That's why we've been working hard to ensure that McAfee® Total Protection software is compatible with the new Windows 7 operating system. Even if you've recently purchased a McAfee product, automatic updates keep your software up to date which means when you're ready for Windows 7, McAfee is ready for you! So you can relax and put your mind at ease knowing that we've got you covered.

Windows 7 Compatibility

McAfee® Total Protection software will be compatible with the new Windows 7 operating system once it is commercially released by Microsoft. Customers using McAfee Local Backup should be aware that this feature will no longer be supported with the Windows 7 operating system. When users are upgrading their computer to Windows 7 they will be notified during the installation process that McAfee Local Backup will no longer be supported on Windows 7. In addition they will be provided with a link to a landing page with instructions on how to restore existing back up files prior to upgrading to Windows 7.

The following scenarios explain how we are ensuring that our customers have a seamless transition to Windows 7:

Windows XP users will be required to uninstall their Windows XP operating system and install a fresh copy of the Windows 7 operating system onto their machine. After the customer has successfully installed the Windows 7 operating system, customers will insert their McAfee® Total Protection CD-ROM to begin installation. During installation, customers will be prompted to visit the McAfee website in order to download and install a Windows 7 compatible version of McAfee® Total Protection software. After customers have successfully installed the latest McAfee version, no further action is required.

Windows Vista users will encounter one of two scenarios:

1. Customers who have installed McAfee Total Protection software onto their Windows Vista machine and whose software has been kept up to date will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 without any problems to their McAfee product. Customers will continue to be protected.
2. Customers who have installed McAfee Total Protection software onto their Windows Vista machine but whose software has not been updated to the latest version will be blocked from upgrading their system when initiating the Windows 7 upgrade process. Customers will be prompted to visit the McAfee website in order to download and install a Windows 7 compatible version of McAfee® Total Protection software. After customers have successfully installed the latest McAfee version they can continue upgrading their operating system.

Windows 7 users who have a fresh installation of the Windows 7 operating system will insert their McAfee® Total Protection CD-ROM to begin installation. During installation, customers will be prompted to visit the McAfee website in order to download and install a Windows 7 compatible version of McAfee® Total Protection software. After customers have successfully installed the latest McAfee version, no further action is required.
